EXODUS: Studio-Bound!
May 13, 2003Reunited San Francisco Bay Area thrashers EXODUS will enter Prairie Sun studios (web site) in Cotati, California on May 23 with producer Andy Sneap (SKINLAB, ARCH ENEMY, NEVERMORE, MACHINE HEAD) to begin recording their new album, "Tempo Of The Damned", for a late 2003 release.
The long-awaited follow-up to 1992's "Force Of Habit" will be recorded over a four-week period and will be mixed at Sneap's Backstage Studios in Ripley, England starting in late June. A five-day pre-production session with Sneap will precede the recording of the album on May 18.
The band, who were most recently signed to Century Media Records, have abandoned their previously announced plan to issue the new album through CCC Records (which stands for "Contra Costa County"),the new label entity formed by former EXODUS manager Toni Isabella and one-time Capitol Records A&R executive Rachel Matthews (who signed EXODUS and RIGOR MORTIS to the label back in the late '80s). "They are just taking too long to get the label up and operating," explained EXODUS manager Steven Warner. "They have been holding us up for a while now and we don't feel that we can count on them anymore. We will be doing it on our own and then shopping the record around to a few of our desirable labels."
As previously reported, "Tempo Of The Damned" will tentatively contain 10 songs and will include freshly-recorded versions of early EXODUS classics "Death Row" and "Impaler", neither one of which had ever appeared on a studio album before. ["Death Row" was originally tracked — but never fully completed — during the sessions for the band's legendary "Bonded By Blood" debut, while a live version of "Impaler" surfaced on the group's comeback 1997 release, "Another Lesson In Violence"]. Other songs set to appear on the CD include an as-yet-untitled number dedicated to late EXODUS frontman Paul Baloff — who passed away in February 2002 after suffering a massive stroke — and reworked versions of two songs originally written for and demoed by WARDANCE, the ill-fated mid-'90s act formed by EXODUS guitarist Gary Holt and drummer Tom Hunting.
In other news, EXODUS have placed the original backdrop from their "Impact Is Imminent" world tour for sale via eBay at this location. The auction ends on Friday, May 16 at approximately 1:00 p.m. PDT.
